What is Mandeville academy?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Mandeville offers a small group of ambitious gifted students the opportunity to be exposed to the highest levels of knowledge and learning in a wide variety of disciplines and public issues.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

An intimate institute that provides the space and time to reflect on complex issues .\u00a0 At the same time it\u2019s a stimulating intellectual environment of peers brimming with ideas. We facilitate \u2018the most beautiful minds\u2019 and their individual growth. Their minds were designed to think creatively, conceptionally, unconventionally. We allow their abilities to excel. In this environment they accumulate the necessary experience that allows them to function at the highest levels. Mandeville is a residential academy where students learn to be independent in a guided environment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After a year of Mandeville Academy, these exceptional students will have been able to develop their personal interests and individual talents in the widest possible way guided by top educators from a wide variety of disciplines. It allows them to prepare for their next steps whether further education or career. In addition, they are part of a unique and exclusive network of people. The Academy unites young gifted students with the upper echelons of society at a very early stage which allows for life long bonds. Why was Mandeville founded?<\/h2>\n

The current turbulent, rapidly changing environment create circumstances that provide new possibilities and opportunities. Traditional structures and patterns do not necessarily apply any further. High impact events, rapid distribution of information and incredible advances of technology require a different world view. Society is changing at an enormous rate which causes uncertainty, discontent, stress and adjustment. To develop real innovative solutions requires a new approach and different perspective(s). Young gifted people have the unique capacity to help shape new solutions in a changing world order. Particularly in a stimulating nourishing environment with appropriate guidance. Mandeville and it\u2019s extensive network allows for this.<\/p>\n

Gifted, highly motivated young adults, \u201cthe most beautiful minds\u201d are capable of much more than society currently grants the opportunity to contribute. Their unique inborn potential is generally smothered by society and traditional educational methods. There is often insufficient space for development of this unique potential.<\/p>\n

Gifted students have a fast working brain, are naturally curious, inquisitive and have a unique view of the world. They think outside of conventions, enjoy thinking of the unthinkable and experiment. They quickly observe linkages and tend to be autonomous independent thinkers. They approach learning materials in a holistic fashion and are interested in the whole and it\u2019s underlying relations. Their rapid processing power allows them to create new solutions to complex issues. At Mandeville we offer a unique curriculum at the highest level where students learn to take the lead. It is essential for gifted students to discover their own path that allows their power of thought and talent to flourish. Mandeville uses it\u2019s strong and varied network, cooperates with educators from the top echelons of the public and private sector as well as scientific and arts communities. This allows our students the possibility to design their personal development path. They learn to apply their unique abilities in an effective and constructive way allowing to shape their personal futures. The Mandeville name<\/h2>\n

The Mandeville name is reference to a number of historical figures carrying the name Mandeville. Each of these people had their own strengths, uniqueness and contribution to society. Collectively this is captured in our motto: Ad Tempus Vitae[\/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner content_placement=”middle”][vc_column_inner width=”1\/3″][vc_single_image image=”739″ img_size=”medium”][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”2\/3″][vc_column_text]\n

Bernard Mandeville<\/h3>\n

(1670 Rotterdam \u2013 1733 London)[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_column_text]Philosopher<\/span><\/span>,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>P<\/span><\/span>hysician<\/span><\/span>, Economist and Satir<\/span><\/span>ist<\/span><\/span>. Bernard Mandeville leaves the Netherlands in 1690 after his\u00a0<\/span><\/span>alleged<\/span><\/span>\u00a0involvement with the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Costermann<\/span><\/span>\u00a0riot in 1690. An\u00a0<\/span><\/span>anti taxation<\/span><\/span>\u00a0protest in Rotterdam. Mandeville writes a satirical poem about the fleet of Jacob van\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Zuijlen<\/span><\/span>\u00a0van\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Nievelt<\/span><\/span>. Fearful for the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>repurcussions<\/span><\/span>\u00a0he sets sail for England. Mandeville\u2019s main thesis is: \u201cVice is the true source of general wellbeing\u201d. Virtue is harmful. He coins the Mandeville paradox: \u201cindividual\u00a0<\/span><\/span>benefit does not necessarily\u00a0<\/span><\/span>equates<\/span><\/span>\u00a0collective benefit\u201d. He is particularly known outside of the Netherlands. Bernard Mandeville was inspired by Michel de Montaigne (1533-1592), Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679) and Pierre Bayle (1647-1706). Quoted by Karl Marx (1818-1893), he inspires the works of Adam Smith (1723-1790), David Hume (1711-1776), Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778), Voltaire (1694-1778), Jeremy Bentham (1748-1832) and John Stuart Mill (1806-1873). Bernard Mandeville teaches us to think non-dogmatically. Imperfections are required forces in society.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner content_placement=”middle”][vc_column_inner width=”1\/3″][vc_single_image image=”740″ img_size=”medium”][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”2\/3″][vc_column_text]\n

Jan van Mandeville<\/h3>\n

(1300 St Albans \u2013 1358 Liege)[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_column_text]Author of \u201cLes Voyages de Jan van Mandeville\u201d<\/span><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>This travelogue inspired both\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Christopher<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Columbus and Marco Polo.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Mandeville\u2019s<\/span><\/span>\u00a0travels\u00a0<\/span><\/span>in 1356 consist of two components. One journey through the Byzantine Empire, Asia Minor, the Holy Land, The Sinai, Egypt onto the fictional cou<\/span><\/span>n<\/span><\/span>try of \u201cPape Jan\u201d. The second journey runs to the far East (India, China and other far eastern territories<\/span><\/span>)<\/span><\/span>. The firs<\/span><\/span>t<\/span><\/span>\u00a0translation from Dutch is in 1434 from the St\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Maartensdal<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>monastery<\/span><\/span>\u00a0in\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Leuven .<\/span><\/span>\u00a0This manuscript also contains a<\/span><\/span>\u00a0fine copy\u00a0<\/span><\/span>of the Rhyme Bible of Jacob van\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Ma<\/span><\/span>e<\/span><\/span>rlant<\/span><\/span>. Travel\u00a0<\/span><\/span>was<\/span><\/span>\u00a0a dangerous\u00a0<\/span><\/span>undertaking<\/span><\/span>\u00a0in the early 14<\/span><\/span>th<\/span><\/span>\u00a0century. It required courage, curiosity and restlessness. Geoffrey de Mandeville<\/h3>\n

Second Earl of Essex (1191-1216)[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_column_text]Geoffrey de Mandeville was an English peer. With 24 friends he opposed King John\u00a0<\/span>f<\/span>o<\/span>r the increased power of the King. Forcing King John to sign the Magna Carta on 15 June 1215 limiting the power of the Kin<\/span>g<\/span>\u00a0and granting greater political freedom. The church is\u00a0<\/span>exonerated<\/span>\u00a0from the reign of the King, justice and law reformed.\u00a0<\/span>In 2016\u00a0<\/span>Geoffrey de Mandeville\u00a0<\/span>succumbs to his injuries incurred in a joust in London<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Geoffrey de Mandeville demonstrates that no\u00a0<\/span>one<\/span>\u00a0is beyond critique<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Authority and power\u00a0<\/span>is<\/span>\u00a0to be questioned to fight compromise<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner content_placement=”middle”][vc_column_inner width=”1\/3″][vc_single_image image=”744″ img_size=”medium”][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”2\/3″][vc_column_text]\n

Geoffrey de Mandeville<\/h3>\n

First Earl of Essex (*1100 \u2013 1144)[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_column_text]Geoffrey de Mandeville\u00a0<\/span>rebels against the King<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>who had\u00a0<\/span>c<\/span>onfiscated part of his family\u2019s patrimony including the Tower\u00a0<\/span>of<\/span>\u00a0London.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The feud escalates and Mandeville is excommunicated in 1143 with the support of Pope\u00a0<\/span>Celestinus<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mandeville met his death\u00a0<\/span>from an archer\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>arrow received in a skirmish. Because he had died excommunicate, his body was denied burial at\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0monastery he had founded\u00a0<\/span>in approximately<\/span>\u00a01136,\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>Walden\u00a0<\/span>P<\/span>riory.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Eventually Pope\u00a0<\/span>Celestinus<\/span>\u00a0II reluctantly agrees for his remains to be buried in the Temple Church in London provided his remains are wrapped in lead to assure his\u00a0<\/span>soul cannot escape to heaven.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>His comrades abide by these conditions but not before punching a few holes in the box to allow his soul to escape anyway. Friendship and Loyalty at\u00a0<\/span>it\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0best.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>In a medieval manuscript, Mandeville\u2019s death is\u00a0<\/span>symboli<\/span>s<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0by a broken lance.
